William B. Smith, Jr. passed away on August 31, 2018. He was born in Danville on August 1, 1923. He was predeceased by his parents William Berkley Smith and Hattie Tate Smith, his sisters Hattie Lee Smith and Louise Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years Mildred Snider Smith of the home and his only child Kimberly Smith Turner (Andy Turner) and his much loved grandsons, Nicholas Turner and William Turner. Also surviving are his beloved brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s, Al Snider, Mary and Dewey Carroll, Clarence Snider, Donna Snider, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill was a graduate of Virginia Tech, served in World War II in England and France and was awarded three battle stars and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was past President of the Danville Evening Lions Club, Past President of the Danville Chapter Reserve Officers Association. He retired from Dan River, Inc. as Corporate Manager of Environmental Affairs and was a Charter Member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 3, 2018 at 12:00 P.M. from the Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Matthew Ricks and the Reverend Susan Hannah officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with Military Honors presented by the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. A visitation will be held on Monday, September 3, 2018 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Townes Funeral Home.
