Virginia Sue Urbanik

Virginia Sue McMullen Urbanik, 91, died on October 20, 2026, in Danville, Virginia.

Sue was born in Clarksburg, WV on June 19, 1935, and spent her early years in Doddridge County. She attended West Virginia University, earning a BS in chemistry. After some years working in industry, she returned to earn a PhD. While in graduate school, she met a fellow student, Arthur Urbanik, in 1966. After marrying, they relocated to Danville, VA, where she taught chemistry at Averett College for 25 years. She was a longtime member of Rivermont Baptist Church. She did not like housework.

Sue was the youngest child of the late Thomas F. McMullen, Sr. and Virginia Carpenter McMullen. Her siblings were Thomas F. Jr., Betty, and Arnold, all deceased. Her son, Geoffrey D. Urbanik, passed away in 2022. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Urbanik, her daughter, Elizabeth McCormick of Pulaski, granddaughter Irena McCormick of Blacksburg, a specially loved daughter-in-law, Liz Urbanik of Richmond, VT, grandson, Malachai Urbanik of Richmond, VT, many nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law, Paul (Cathy) Turek of Puyallup, WA.

A memorial service will be held in Danville, VA at a later date. Interment will be in Broad Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Jane Lew, West Virginia.
