Tillie Phelps

Tillie Herndon Phelps, 87 of Danville, died Tuesday, Nov.15, 2016 after a two year decline in health. Tillie was born in Danville, VA March 24, 1929 to the late Claude and Malloy Herndon.    Mrs. Phelps lived her entire life in Danville, VA and was married to Richard Phelps Sr. who predeceased her in 2000. She retired from the City of Danville Finance Department where she had worked for over 30 years. Mrs. Phelps was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church and served as the treasurer of the Sunday School class and Church Circle meetings.    Survivors include one son, Richard and wife Desiree' of Danville; grandchildren, John Phelps of Danville, VA., Christopher Jones and wife Aisha of Raleigh, NC. and Erin Jones of Danville, VA.; great-grandchildren Devin, Austin, Branson and Lelia; nieces Jackie Smith and husband Dale, and Diane Doss and husband Ronnie, all of Danville, who were very special in her life. She was also blessed to have family members Robin Reed and husband Randy and their two children, Caleb and Elijah. Tillie was predeceased by two sisters Devoreen H. Myers and Christine H. Hazelwood.    The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm and at other times at 228 Updike Place, Danville, VA., home of her son and daughter in-law.   Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016 at Townes Funeral Home by the Rev. Jeffery Wright. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.    The family would like to send their sincere appreciation and thanks to Liberty Hospice Care staff, the staff of Brookdale Danville Piedmont Senior Living Facility and to their friends.    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Danville Cancer Association, 223 Riverview Drive, Danville, VA. 24540.
