Sidney Irvin Carroll, 90, of Providence, North Carolina, went home to be with Jesus on October 22, 2025.
He was born on December 15, 1934, to Eugene Edgar Carroll and Annie Lee Wood Carroll.
On August 9, 1953, Irvin married the love of his life, Annie Laurie Gunn. Together they shared 71 wonderful years of marriage. Irvin was preceded in death by Annie Laurie; his parents; his brother, Eugene Edgar Carroll Jr.; and his son-in-law, Tom Stanfield.
He is survived by his three children, Carlton Carroll (Nan), Gary Carroll, and Cindy Stanfield; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Irvin was a founding member of the Providence Volunteer Fire Department and an Army National Guard veteran. He faithfully served his community in many ways, including coaching the Providence Little League Baseball Team for many years.
He had a tender heart—especially for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Irvin loved the Lord, his family, and the satisfaction of a hard day’s work. Over the years, he farmed and worked for Western Electric in Burlington, McLean Trucking Company, Yellow Freight, Evelyn’s Dress Shop in Danville, Virginia, and the North Carolina Department of Corrections in Yanceyville. Known as the “King of cutting, mauling, and hauling firewood,” Irvin was always happiest when keeping busy.
At just nine years old, Irvin dedicated his life to Jesus at a revival meeting and was baptized in Moon Creek in Providence. His faith remained the foundation of his life.
Irvin also loved to eat, especially oysters and banana pudding.
The family will receive friends and family at Irvin’s home in Providence. A visitation will be held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 1705 Shady Grove Road, Providence, NC, on Saturday, October 25, at 1:30 p.m., with a graveside service to follow at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor Scott Coats officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to: Shady Grove United Methodist Church – Food Pantry, 1705 Shady Grove Road, Providence, NC 27315, or Providence Fire and Rescue, 6655 Old NC Highway 86 N, Providence, NC 27315.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to all of “Irvin’s Angels” over the past few years—Susan, Wendy, and the many caring staff members at Roman Eagle.
