On September 15, 2018, Sandra “Sandy” Marks Pretty died peacefully in the presence of her family. Sandy was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Henry and Clara Marks. She was a resident of Danville, Virginia, for over 50 years, until her courageous battle with ALS. Her family include her sons, Mark Pretty, and his wife, Joy Lee, of Lynchburg, VA, and David Pretty, and his wife, Kim, of Clinton, North Carolina. She loved and cherished her grandchildren, Landon Pretty, and his fiancé, Anna Fitzgerald; Jessica Wall and her husband, Richard; and her “bonus” grandchildren, Aaron and Allyson Reynolds. She is survived by her sisters, Nancy Farley and Mary Beth Sullivan, and her cousin, Dorothy Hargis. She is also survived by Richard Pretty, her sons’ father. Sandy had numerous special nieces, nephews and friends. Sandy was a faithful servant of Christ. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia, for over 50 years, where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Wednesday Club and the Junior Wednesday Club, and she was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She volunteered at numerous church and civic organizations, including God’s Storehouse. Sandy attended the College of William and Mary. She worked at Dibrell Brothers for over 30 years. Sandy’s faith and love for God was never more evident than during her recent fight with ALS. Even during this debilitating period of time, she gave to others more than she ever took from them. Her faith was amazingly strong. She was a role model to others. Everyone that Sandy’s life touched came away a better person. Her family now includes the amazing support network and caregivers at Seven Hills Hospice. They were of tremendous support to her and her loved ones. Her family will be walking on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at the ALS Walk in Roanoke, Virginia. This team’s name is, “Pretty’s Amazing Grace.” Come walk with us, either in person or consider a donation in her name. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sandy’s name to The ALS Association, Richmond Regional Office, 8100 Three Chopt Road, Suite 147, Richmond, VA 23229, or to God’s Storehouse, 750 Memorial Drive, Danville, VA 24541.
