Philip Andrew Haley

Jun 28, 1955 — Oct 20, 2026

Philip Andrew Haley passed away peacefully on October 20, 2026 after a short and courageous battle with glioblastoma. He was born on June 28,1955 in Danville, VA to the late William Frederick Haley, Sr. and Rosemary Hellman Haley.

Philip was a loving father to Ann Cameron Schieber (Michael) of Lake Forest, IL, Martha Peyton Hetzer (TJ) of Cincinnati, OH and Andrew Stuart Haley (Kelli) of Charlotte, NC. Philip was a devoted grandfather to Andrew Michael Schieber, Elizabeth Scott Schieber, Cole Philip Schieber, Hope Elizabeth Hetzer, Clare Cameron Hetzer and Margaret Keller Hetzer. He was married to Patricia Shelhorse Haley for 45 years.

Philip was predeceased by his sisters, Anne Marie (Amy) Haley Atkins and Betty Stuart Haley Scott (Jim), and his brother William (Bill) Frederick Haley, Jr. (Carolyn). He is survived by his sisters Judy Haley Hooker, Terri Haley Hall (Phil), brothers Joe Haley (Leslie), Jeff Haley (Sarah), and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Philip attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from George Washington High School in 1973. He went on to Hampden-Sydney College, graduating in 1977, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and was a proud member of both the football and lacrosse teams. His years at Hampden-Sydney were an important part of his life, fostering lifelong friendships, camaraderie, and his competitive spirit. The College’s enduring mission, “to form good men and good citizens,” was reflected in the man Philip became and in the values he carried throughout his life.

After college, Philip began his career in Richmond, Virginia with Travelers Insurance. His professional journey took him to Roanoke, back to Richmond and then to Winnetka, Illinois, a North Shore suburb of Chicago. In Winnetka, he raised his family and continued to build a successful career spanning insurance, financial services, sales, marketing, and municipal leadership. He served in leadership roles at Xerox, Amundi Pioneer, and Achaean Financial, where his work reflected his strengths in business development, sales, marketing, and financial services.

Philip returned to Danville in 2013 and served as President and CEO of the United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County. He later served as Director of Customer Accounts followed by Director of Power and Light for Danville, bringing the same dedication, leadership, and ability to connect with people that characterized his professional life. In retirement, he enjoyed staying active professionally through his work with Expert Business Development.

Born into a large family, Philip learned early on the value of family and remained close with his siblings and their spouses throughout his life. Philip was a loving, present, and supportive father who was always there for his children and took great pride in their lives. Adoringly known as Pops, Philip loved his grandchildren with his whole heart. He cherished every part of their lives, from their humor and phone calls to cheering them on at sporting events and simply sharing everyday moments. He loved the Chicago Cubs, attending Hampden-Sydney football games, cycling, scuba diving, and playing golf. Above all, Philip found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Philip’s life will be held Monday, October 26 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Michael Duffy and Father Anthony Senya officiating. Immediately following, a private graveside service will take place at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service starting at 4 p.m. at The Danville Golf Club. The family wishes to thank the staff at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, IL, Radford Green in Lincolnshire, IL and JourneyCare Hospice for the loving and compassionate care provided to our father. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hampden-Sydney College Football (Gridiron Club) in memory of Philip who believe deeply in family, friendship, and supporting young men in their education. Townes Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for the family.
