Michael Anderson Payne, 74, of Danville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025. A devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Michael touched the lives of all who knew him with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Born on August 13, 1951, Michael was the son of the late John Anderson Payne and Lendy Crews Payne. He was a proud graduate of GW High School in 1969, where he excelled as a member of the school's baseball team. Michael went on to attend Danville Community College, where he earned an associate’s degree. His professional career was marked by a legacy of service and leadership. Michael worked at First National Bank, was a partner at J.C. Bradford Company, and retired as the manager of Wells Fargo Advisors.
Beyond his professional life, Michael dedicated much of his time to serving his community. He was an active member of the Danville Exchange Club and served as the Treasurer for the Arthritis Foundation. He also held the role of Chairman of the Little Life Organization, where he made a lasting impact on the lives of many. Michael was deeply involved with his church, North Main Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Deacons, Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Sunday School teacher. He wore many hats in the church and was a steadfast example of leadership, humility, and service.
Michael's love for his family and friends was boundless. His mantra was simple yet profound: “What if you are the only example of kindness someone sees?” and “The Lord has blessed me so why shouldn’t I bless someone else?” His kindness and generosity were felt by everyone he met.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Katherine Fuller Payne; his son, Joshua Michael Payne; his sister, Phyllis Payne Bowles; his nieces, Grace Moses and Lindsay Hart; and his nephew, Jackson Fuller. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Lendy Payne.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Sharon Adkins and Chinua Martin for their unwavering help and support in these final months.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM, at North Main Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the residence, 161 Knottingham Way, at other times.
