Mary was born on February 26, 1939, a daughter to the late Chauncey and Mary Ellen Reynolds in Danville, VA, where she lived her entire life. At the age of 15, she professed belief in Christ, was baptized, and joined the New Baptist Church. She later joined Bennett Memorial Baptist Church, before joining with her son at Immanuel Kingdom Praise and Worship Center in 2002, where she served as a deaconess until her passing. Her goal in life was to serve God and to do all that she could for her companion and children whom she loved most dearly. She extended that love to all she came in contact with.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Wanda Gail Tate, Alfonzo Tate, Jr. (Tanya), Kathy Walton (George), Stanley Tate (Melissa), and Corey Tate (Tara), and a host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Alfonzo Tate, Sr., a son, Dave Tate, 3 sisters, and 1 brother.
A homegoing service for Mary Tate will be held at Bibleway Cathedral on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM, and will be officiated by her son, Alfonso Tate, Jr. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior at the same location.
"When mother is gone to Jesus, I want you to look to the rainbow and you will see me over the rainbow. Just keep your heads up and look to Jesus, for somewhere over the rainbow, you will find me there." -Mary Tate.
