Janie Hurrell Jones, 95, of 1647 Lawless Creek Road, Blairs, Virginia, passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 6. Janie was born on August 1, 1922, to Thomas H. and Roberta C. Hurrell. After “Berta” died unexpectedly, Janie was raised from the age of two by her Aunt and Uncle, Dora and Emmett Snead. Janie had two brothers, Leonard and Leslie T Hurrell, who was killed on the USS Houston, March 1, 1942. Janie is believed to be the first Gold Star family member from World War II from Danville. In 1943, Janie married Austin E Jones Sr. who survives and has been her adoring husband for 74 years. She is also survived by four children: Austin Jones Jr (Sandy) of Blairs; Suzanne Marshall of Blacksburg; Cathy Nesselroade (Bob) of Danville; and Frankie H. Jones (Diane) of Danville. Grandchildren include April Daily, Leslie Jester, Christie Wall, Holly Vicks, Michael Marshall, Ashley Jones, Scott Jones, and Megan James as well as six great grandchildren. She was also particularly fond of her devoted friends and caregivers, Shirley McCain and Michael Younger. Janie was a past Worthy Matron of the Danville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Life Master of the Danville Duplicate Bridge Club. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church. The family would like to give special thanks to Commonwealth Home Nursing and Hospice and cargegivers Darlene Reaves, Vickye Pittmon, Stacy Davis, and Ellen Cop. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 8th, from 6-7pm at Townes Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Townes Memorial Chapel on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11am with Reverend Allen Mahan officiating. Private interment will follow. The family will receive friends at the residence at other times. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Janie to The Salvation Army or a charity of your choice. .
