James Steven Wood

May 27, 1960 — June 24, 2025

James Wood, 65, of Danville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born May 27, 1960, to Claude and Thelma Wood, James spent his life rooted in Danville, where he built a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and love for the outdoors.

He worked alongside his father at Dameron Plumbing and later continued the business with his son, Michael. James believed in doing things the right way and never hesitated to speak his mind—especially when it came from a place of care.

Throughout his children’s school years, he was actively involved in the Stony Mill, Brosville, and Tunstall PTOs and athletic programs. He was a constant presence at games, school events, and anywhere he could show up and support his kids.

James loved to hunt and fish, and found joy in the quiet and simplicity of being outside. He was a proud member of Stone’s Mill Hunt Club, where he spent countless seasons surrounded by good friends and good stories.

If he liked you, he picked on you. If he didn’t, you knew it. He was fiery, loyal, and full of heart—a man who didn’t mince words and had a deep appreciation for people who were real with him. His humor, strength, and presence will be deeply missed.

James is survived by his wife, Mitzi Huffman Wood; his children, Megan Weatherford (Heath), Michael Wood (fiancée Madison), Jaime Wood, and Jon Wood; and his grandchildren, Chloe, Hayden, Harper, and Reese. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Fowlkes (Sam), and many beloved extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Thelma Wood.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Family will receive visitors at 213 Red Bud Lane. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Commonwealth Hospice in honor of the extraordinary support they gave our family — especially Melissa and Mentoria.
