James Robertson Harper, 70, of Dry Fork, VA, passed away on Friday, September 14th, 2018. He was born June 17th, 1948 in Dry Fork, VA, to Ruth Robertson Harper and George Ryland Harper Sr. He is survived by his wife, Frances Powell Harper and his children; Leah Harper Jennings and Adam James Harper. He is also survived by three cherished granddaughters; Grace, Addison, and Lila. In addition, he is survived by his brother George Ryland Harper, Jr. and wife Carol along with his niece Stephanie Ruth Harper. Jim went to Chatham High School where he played basketball and was awarded MVP player of the year. He attended Ferrum College for one year and played basketball, then transferred to the University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelors in Physical Education. He returned to Danville, he was employed by the Danville School System where he taught Physical Education and coached basketball at Bonner Jr. High. Jim was a third generation dairy farmer where he had one of the most productive herds and loved his life on the farm. He was a lifetime member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held at Highland Burial Park on Tuesday, September 18 at 2:00PM. The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Monday, September 17th, from 7:00 to 8:30PM and at other times at their residence, 1688 Harper Road, Dry Fork, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Hermon Baptist Church or Mt. Hermon Fire Department.
