Dr. Jack B. Spainhour, Jr., age 82, died peacefully on January 15, 2026, in Danville, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 6, 1943, in Covington, Virginia, the son of Jack B. Spainhour, Sr. and Barbara Croker Spainhour.
Jack was a graduate of Lenoir High School in Lenoir, North Carolina. He earned his undergraduate degree at Gardner-Webb College in 1963, followed by a B. S. degree from Wake Forest College in 1965. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1969. Jack completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Medical College of Georgia. In 1973, he began his medical career in Danville, Virginia, where he joined the practice of Dr. Clifford Gaddy and Dr. Edwin Harvie. He worked tirelessly caring for his patients in Danville until his retirement.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Libby Spainhour, and his two daughters, Stephanie Spainhour, Rebecca Laughinghouse and her husband, Brandon, and his son, Jack B. Spainhour, III (Jay). He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Zoey and Zara Zickefoose and Bailey and Collier Laughinghouse. He is survived by one brother and three sisters as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jack was an avid reader, art collector, and greatly enjoyed golf and tennis. He loved to travel and, most of all, treasured spending time with his family. He also served as a member of the Averett University Board of Trustees and as President of the Danville-Pittsylvania Academy of Medicine. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers, Taneka Neal of Commonwealth Hospice, as well as Linda Samuels, Betty Gunn, Rasheen Toppin, and Amy Head for their compassionate care and support.
