Harry D. Milam, 93, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret Milam; his parents, Beulah Walton Milam and Joseph Thomas Milam; his siblings, Joseph W. Milam, M.D., Frances M. Stoneburner, M.D., Richard T. Milam, and William “Bill” E. Milam; and his beloved Aunt Ethel Milam, who was very active in his life over the years.

Harry is survived by his four children, Kirk Milam (Karen) of Rappahannock, Holley Lewis (Scott) of Midlothian, Mark Milam of Sutherlin, and Glenn Milam (Angela) of Sutherlin. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jo M. Rink Plyer of Danville, and his sister-in-law, Katherine G. Milam of Union Hall.

Harry is survived by his grandchildren: Dustin Milam (Rui), Kirk Thomas Milam Jr., Tanner Lewis, Anna Milam, Mason Lewis, Hollyn Milam (fiancé Josiah Pickrel), Hayden Milam, Rhys Milam, and Cole Milam. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

Harry was born and raised in Sutherlin, Virginia, in a family of strong faith, close family ties, and a deep commitment to excellence. He graduated from George Washington High School and earned his undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech. After serving a few years in the U.S. Army, he went on to earn a degree in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Harry was the operator and co-owner of Modern Pharmacy in Danville for more than 60 years. He served the public with pride and encouraged and mentored several generations of pharmacists throughout Virginia and North Carolina.

Harry was a longtime member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, several service organizations, including the Danville Host Lions Club, and several professional pharmacy organizations in the area. He enjoyed his work, time with his family, tending his garden—especially his famous tomato patch—watching and feeding his many hummingbirds, and managing his farms. He was a mentor to all who knew him, most notably his children and grandchildren.

The family gives special thanks to Nannie King for her care for both Margaret and Harry, as well as the children and grandchildren, over many years. Special thanks also go to Theresa Chandler and Janice Rigney for their loving and devoted care for Harry over the past several years.
