Guy Ricker Cooter, beloved husband, father, grandfather passed December 28, 2023. Born March 21, 1935, in Kingsport, Tennessee, he was the son of Edgar Newton and Claudia Ricker Cooter. He is survived by his wife, Leah Elliott Cooter; two sons, David Guy Carter, and wife Kelly, of Atlanta, and Steven Ricker Carter and wife Nicole, of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Ethan, Laurel, Jack, and Ellie. Guy is also survived by his sister, Ramona Hodnett. He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Foley. He attended George Washington High School and graduated from the University of Virginia where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received his M.S. in Commerce from the University of Richmond. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the United States Small Business Administration and was past commissioner of the Central Virginia Soccer League and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. He was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Singular of personality until the end, his never-ending love of a good pun and his lifelong affection for the Sunday comics drove a reliable onslaught of humor and good-natured laughs shared with friends and family. Armed with an impressively wide and deep fund of knowledge, and on occasion given to a curmudgeonly bent, he shared his opinions with the world in the Richmond Times Dispatch, Danville Register & Bee under the sobriquet “the Sage of Wynn’s Falls,” ultimately segueing to a brief foray as a published nature photographer. As a prolific collector, it is readily apparent that his interests spanned multiple decades of history and popular culture, and clearly powered his ability to have a well-formed opinion on almost anything—his questionable support for canned meat products notwithstanding…
We will miss him dearly, and remember the small annotations of his life with great love and fondness.
Memorial service will be held on January 6, 2024, 2pm at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with Visitation at 1pm.
