Floyd Allen Poindexter, 83, of Danville , VA passed away to his Heavenly Home on September 14, 2021 at Sovah Health Center after a lengthy illness. He was one of 15 children born to Hardin W. Poindexter and Luna Strader Poindexter. He is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Betty Ann Young Poindexter, his sons Bruce A. Poindexter and wife Angie, Brad A. Poindexter and wife Kathy of Danville. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Daniel A. Poindexter (Lauren) of Winston Salem, NC, Amy P. Sanders (Benjamin) of Forest, VA Sasha Poindexter and Zarena Poindexter of Danville, step-granddaughter, Richelle Price of Christiansburg, VA and two great grandsons, Nolan Ray Sanders and Chase Allen Poindexter and step great granddaughter, Aralyn Price. He is also survived by his sisters, Betty Poindexter Faber, Linda Poindexter Davis, Alice Poindexter Cox (Fred) of Reidsville, NC, Angela Poindexter Garrett (Rob) of High Point, NC, Susan Poindexter Doyle (Ernie) of Pelham, NC, and by his brothers Hardin Poindexter Jr. (Joyce) of Reidsville, NC, and Frank Poindexter (Pam) of Monroe, NC. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by four sisters, Dorothy “Louise” Poindexter Rice, Mary Poindexter Tilley, Nelva Poindexter Roach, and Doris Carol Poindexter, three brothers, Clarence W. Poindexter, Leon Poindexter, and Walter Ray Poindexter. Floyd served 53 years in law enforcement starting as a deputy in Los Angeles, California, and later as an officer in the Danville Police Department. He served as town sergeant and Chief of Police in Chatham for sixteen years. He retired in 2018 but went on to serve as a part time deputy in the Danville Sheriff’s Department under Mike Mondul. Floyd was an avid musician and loved to entertain family and friends with his chordarama at parties and gatherings. He loved to build grandfather clocks and do repairs for others. He loved all of God’s creatures and was known to feed many strays from the back of his car and sometimes he would bring them home and open the gate to let them in just as Jesus opened His arms for him to come Home. A graveside service will conducted Saturday, October 30 at 2:00pm at Schoolfield Cemetery in Danville with Ron Roach, nephew of Floyd, of Johnson City, TN, officiating. Family and friends are welcome to come celebrate his life.
