Eunice M. Oakes, 99, died July 26, 2025, at her home in the Mount Hermon Community with her family by her side. She was born on May 4, 1926, the daughter of the late Tonie Lee Moore and the late Nannie Ola Childress Moore.
Upon the death of her husband, John Anderson (Mike) Oakes in 1953, at the age of twenty-seven, she was left with three young daughters to raise. After learning to type, she got a job with the R. J. Baldwin Ins. Agency and later retired from the Finance Department of the City of Danville where she worked primarily with insurance.
Eunice loved her children and grandchildren teaching them in word and by deed her faith in Jesus Christ and her love for all her family. She was a life-long member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School in the Children’s Department, worked on various committees, and sang in the New Generation Choir. At her death, she was the church’s oldest member.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother William Moore and her sisters Cornelia (Sis) Harris, Janie Moore, Evelyn Yeatts, Clemence Sweet, Mary Lavine (Beanie) Mays, Gertrude Carter, and Nancy Edwards. She was also predeceased by her grandson Keith Hardy and her son-in-law Jackie Hardy. She was the last surviving member of her generation.
She is survived by daughters Joyce Johnson (Garnett), Margaret Stovall (Doug), and Becky Mitchell (Bill); grandchildren Sherrie Jones (Mark), Geoff Johnson (Sherry), Monica Scearce, and Kevin Hardy (Casey); great grandchildren Jason Jones, Daniel Jones, Kayla Rowland (Wes), Bethany Scearce (Harry), Hannah Scearce, Jonathon Johnson (Rachel), Sarah Johnson, Colin Johnson, and Luke Johnson; great-great grandchildren Logan Scearce, Elijah Rigsby and Harper Rigsby and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Cheryl Lucas who gave our mother loving companionship, comfort, and support for the last ten years as her caregiver.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday July 30 at Mount Hermon Baptist on Route 41 with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. The Reverend Steve Chromy and the Reverend Ryan Riley will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Burial Park.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.
