Dr. Edwin James Harvie, Jr. died February 27, 2026 in Raleigh. Born September 22, 1932 in Winston Salem and raised in Danville, VA, he was the son of Edwin James Harvie and Mary Henderson Roane Harvie. He attended Danville public schools and was an Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Virginia, receiving BA and MD degrees. Following an internship at Kansas University Medical Center, he served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps in Korea and Fort Myer, VA. He then completed a 3-year residency in internal medicine at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. In 1964 he joined Dr. Clifford Gaddy in the practice of internal medicine, becoming the first partnership of internists in Danville. The practice grew to six internists and was known as Internal Medicine Associates, Ltd. He retired from private practice in 2006.

Throughout his career Dr. Harvie was active in the affairs of organized medicine. He was a member of the Danville-Pittsylvania Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Medical Association, and was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, receiving its laureate award in 1995. He served multiple terms on the Board of Directors of the Medical Society of Virginia and for 12 years was a member of its delegation to the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association, serving as its chair in his final 3 years. He served on the Board of Directors of the University of Virginia Medical School Foundation. A beloved and respected physician, Dr. Harvie was a volunteer of the Free Clinic of Danville from 1993 to 2015 and served as its Medical Director from 2004 to 2015. In 2012 he received the Unsung Hero Physician Award given by the Virginia Health Care Foundation.

He was a 50-year member and past president of the Rotary Club of Danville, a past president of the Danville Concert Association, and a past member of the Danville Golf Club and the German Club. He was a former member of the Church of the Epiphany where he served on the Vestry and twice as Senior Warden. In 2015, he and Mrs. Harvie moved to the Cypress in Raleigh, NC where they were members of All Saints Anglican Church.

He was pre-deceased by Betty, his wife of 65 years and his brother, Lewis Edwin Harvie. He is survived by his children Elizabeth Harvie Schrum and her husband Owen of Raleigh, and Edwin James Harvie III and his wife Tamara of Mason Neck, VA. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Anne Katherine Falterman (Seraphim); Meredith Schrum Trueblood (Wesley); Eric Lewis Schrum (Kristin); Carah Elizabeth Harvie; and Lewis Edwin Harvie, as well as six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, March 6 at 11 a.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, 908 Deboy St., Raleigh, NC, followed by a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Danville. The family will receive friends preceding the graveside service from 2:30 – 3:15 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home in Danville.
