Dorothy Layne Wright

Dorothy Layne Wright passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, in Danville, Virginia.

Dorothy was born on April 26, 1932, of the late Bose James Layne and Lillian Dickerson Layne. She graduated from Cobb Memorial High School in Ruffin, NC in 1950. She went on to attend Women's College, UNC, Greensboro, NC, and attended some classes at DCC over the years.

She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church, where she served as a WMU Leader, UBS Leader, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. She worked at Swanson Motors in 1951, Southern Bank of Commerce from 1952-1960, and retired from Signet Bank as branch manager of the riverside branch in 1995.

She served as treasurer of the Torch Business & Professional Women's Club, Danville Christian Women, and Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She served as secretary at Dan River Retirees, and was voted woman of the year in 1985 and 2013. She enjoyed her flowers, gardening, sewing, and visiting.

She is survived by her sons, Garland "Garnie" Walker, Jr., Michael L. Walker (Suzanne), and Kent Wright, daughter, Penny Merricks, sister-in-law, Patsy Layne, Grandchildren, Matthew Walker of Raliegh, NC, Daniel Walker of Raliegh, NC, Jonathan Walker (Meredith), Andrew Walker (Megan), and Karen Tucker, all of Danville, VA, great-grandchildren, Koryn, Layla, and Nox Walker, Sophia, Faith, Jacob, Easton, Teagen, Cash, and Kendall Walker, foster sister, Doris Baise Carter (H.B.) of Virginia Beach.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Harold J. Layne, her husbands, W. E. Tucker and Buford Wright, and her grandson, Gregory "Greg" Tucker.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Townes Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Tim Rogers. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to service. Inurnment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
