Carl Reid Taylor, Sr., 78 went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 15, 2025. Born January 23, 1947, to Carl Everett Taylor, Jr. and Christine Lois Williams Taylor in Danville, Virginia Reid lived his entire life in Danville where he was a charter member of North Main Baptist Church. He was a highly competitive athlete from a young age spending his summers practicing and playing baseball at Market Garden in the Babe Ruth, Connie Mack and Stan Musial Leagues. At George Washington High School, Reid lettered in football, basketball, and baseball under legendary coaches: Coach Alger Pugh, Coach Ben Kendall and Coach Bob Lakey. Reid still has many lifelong friends from his childhood and high school who he cherished as family.
A 1966 graduate of George Washington High School, Reid went on to play collegiate baseball at Wingate College and later at Milligan College, Johnson City Tennessee. Where he excelled and lettered in baseball and played basketball. Following his graduation in 1970, he was named head coach of baseball at Gretna High School where he led the program to their first ever district title. Reid spent nearly three decades working in Pittsylvania County before returning to his Alma Matter, G.W. to teach, coach and serve as Athletic Director for another decade and was very instrumental in the revitalization of many projects and improvements on campus. Over the years Reid loved spending his time coaching baseball, officiating basketball, watching his children and grandchildren play sports, talking with friends on the phone, collecting political medallions and pins, and spending time with his family at their vacation home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Reid is survived by his wife, Ann, his son, C.R. Taylor, Jr. (Diane) of Brookings, Oregon, his daughter, Elizabeth Taylor Patrick (Will) of Gordonsville, Virginia, and the lights of his life, his grandchildren Emerson Grace Patrick and Reece Everett Patrick both of Gordonsville, Virginia.
The funeral will be held at Townes Funeral Home Chapel, 215 West Main Street Danville, Virginia on Saturday December 20, 2025 at 1:00 PM with interment at Highland Burial Park.
