Buddy Nathaniel Hudgins, 77, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2026, after a four-month decline in health. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing he is now at peace.
Buddy was born on April 16, 1948, to the late Segasta “Scat” Brumfield Hudgins and Schaub “Slim” Hudgins. He graduated from GWHS in 1966, beginning a life defined by dedication, service, and love.
On June 15, 1968, he married the love of his life, Judith “Judy” Gosney. Their 57 years of marriage were a beautiful example of devotion, faithfulness, and partnership. Together they built a strong and loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife Judy; his daughter Wendy Brooks and husband Acie; and his son Jonathan Hudgins and wife Natalie.
His greatest joy in life was being “Poppa” to his six cherished grandchildren: Taylor Paige (Mat) and Holland Alexandra Brooks; Jacob Dillion (Kindal) and Haley Brooke Hudgins; and Jackson McCoy and Charlotte Belle Oakes. Nothing made him smile more than time spent with them.
Buddy is also survived by his sisters, Linda Phillips and husband Roger of Newport News, VA, and Bonnie Meadors of Danville, along with numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972, including a year in Vietnam. After returning home, he dedicated 36 years of faithful service to Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company before retiring.
Service to others was woven throughout Buddy’s life. He was a Cardiac Technician and volunteered faithfully for over 30 years. He served with Mount Cross Fire and Rescue and Chatham Rescue Squad, where he became a lifetime member. Helping others was never a duty to him—it was simply who he was.
Buddy enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He loved rabbit hunting with his beagles, earned a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do, enjoyed scuba diving with his son, and spent many hours at the archery range at Goodyear. He lived with quiet strength, steady hands, and a humble heart.
Above all, Buddy was a good and honorable man. He loved his wife deeply, worked hard to provide for his family, and treated others with kindness and respect. He never spoke ill of others and never sought attention for the many lives he touched. The world needs more people like him.
He will be missed beyond measure, remembered with gratitude, and loved always.
A memorial service will be held Monday February 16, 2026 2:00pm at Townes Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends on Sunday February 15, 2026 at Townes Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 pm and at other times 2020 Powhatan Drive Danville, VA 24540.
