Anne Covington Oakley Branham, 95, died peacefully at Roman Eagle Nursing Home on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. She had been in declining health for the last two years. Ms. Branham was born in Danville, VA, on April 28, 1921, to the late Clarence Earl Oakley and Elsie Covington Oakley. She was also the niece of William Clay McCubbins and Helen Oakley McCubbins. Ms. Branham was a graduate of George Washington High School, and attended Mary Washington College, in Fredricksburg, VA. After college, she lived in Washington, DC for 40 years having worked for the government and Varian Associates. In 1970, she returned to Danville, and worked at Danville Community College Library as a Librarian Assistant until her retirement in 1986. She was a life-long member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher, and involved with various church charities. Ms. Branham was also a former member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, as well as a founding member and past president of the Danville Area Humane Society. Throughout her life, she was an artist, painter and avid reader. She loved the beach and meeting with friends. She will be remembered as an honest, caring, and gentle person—always willing to offer a helping hand. Ms. Branham has a strongly rooted history in Danville, having been the last of her family residing in the Danville area since 1890. She is survived by her daughter, Tracey Branham Madrid, and her son-in-law John Madrid, Durham, NC; granddaughter Elizabeth Madrid, Carrboro, NC; and grandson Eric Madrid, Hillsborough, NC. She is also survived by nephew Jonathan Hall, and his wife Sharon Hall, Ruckersville, VA. Graveside funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 2, at 2pm, at Mountain View Cemetery, by the Rev. Lisa Nordan and Colleen Wright.
